Tyler Jo Smith

Tyler Jo Smith is Professor of Classical Art and Archaeology at the University of Virginia, where she also serves as Director of the Interdisciplinary Archaeology Program. She received her BA in Classics at Davidson College and both her master's and doctorate in Classical Archaeology from Oxford University. An expert on the art and material culture of the ancient Greek world, her research focuses on performance, religion, and festivals. Tyler Jo is the author of numerous articles on these topics and several books, including  Komast Dancers in Archaic Greek Art (2012) and Religion in the Art of Archaic and Classical Greece (2021). She co-edited A Companion to Greek Art (2018) and is the co-founder of Kerameikos.org, an international project committed to making ancient Greek decorated pottery accessible to the wider public. As a field archaeologist, she is currently involved in the Coastal Caesarea Archaeological Project in Israel and the American Excavations at Morgantina in Sicily. Tyler Jo has been the recipient of several teaching awards, most recently the Jefferson Scholars Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching (UVA, 2022) and has held many grants and fellowships for her research, including a Digital Advancement Grant from the from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
